If you’ve worked as a web designer for any length of time, you’ve probably been faced with the following question from a client: “Can I have music on my website?”.

Having been in the business for a number of years now, we’ve had to answer the above question numerous times with an explanation of why having music on your website is a poor choice. If the above articles (and the related comments) don’t convince you, than I’m afraid we’re at a loss.

Of course, there are always exceptions: you’re selling music online (so does iTunes, but there’s no background music there), you’re building a site to promote a band or musician, you’re a radio station with an online presence, etc.

Don’t fit into any of the above categories? Then… just say “no”.
